KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Korean Association of Information & Telecommunication (KAIT) hopes to seal successful business cooperation between Malaysian and South Korean Information Communications & Technology companies, said its executive director Troy Choi.

In an interview, he said his association would bring a strong business mission to the Malaysia-Korea ICT Business Match Making 2008 here on Sept 9 and 10 to enhance co-operation in T-DMB or Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting and IPTV or Internet Protocol Television.

The two-day programme, which is the fourth in the last five years, is also backed by the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA), The Association of the Computer & Multimedia Industry (PIKOM) and Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

"Malaysia is an important partner for ICT, especially in terms of gaining market access into the other markets in Asean and the Middle East. We are serious about participation for technology transfer and expertise," Choi said.

Choi said one of the strong features of Malaysian companies that had attracted South Korean companies was their ability to sell solutions overseas.

Despite a strong domestic market for T-DMB, South Korean T-DMB device manufacturers are hoping to expand their export markets.

Today, South Korea is recognised as one of the world leaders in T-DMB, which is a digital radio transmission system for transmitting multimedia content such as TV onto mobile devices. Some of South Korea's major T-DMB suppliers are Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

According to Choi, South Korean ICT companies have established overseas markets in Brazil, Chile, Indonesia, Romania, Russia, Hungary, Portugal, Thailand, Vietnam and India.

Malaysia, he said, has also shown potential in markets for FTTH or Fibre to the Home and portal service.

"Based on recent discussions with Telekom Malaysia and other parties, we are exploring market potential for FTTH, IPTV and portal service," Choi said. "We have identified 65 Korean companies who are seriously looking at pursuing business partnerships with Malaysian companies."

Besides T-DMB and IPTV, Korean companies are also keen on pursuing partnerships for key industries that include RFID or Radio Frequency Identification Device, mobile content, mobile communications, data security, on-line gaming and technology for LED or light-emitting diodes.
