KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The total prize money for the fifth edition of MSC Malaysia-Institute of Higher Learnings (IHLs) Business Plan Competition has been increased to RM28,500 from RM18,000 for winners this year.

Announcing this today, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC)'s chief executive officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said the prize increase of RM2,000 from last year was to show MDeC's commitment to promote technopreneurship in IHLs.

"The total prize is RM28,500. The first prize winner for 2008 will get RM7,000 for a business plan and RM5,000 for business idea," he told reporters after the launch of the business plan competition here.

An initiative of MDeC and IHLs in Malaysia, the competition comes under the National Unipreneur Development Program.

The competition which welcomes business ideas and business plans is open to all IHLs in two categories, namely Business Idea and Business Plan.

The top ten finalists in the ideas category will be also offered a pre-seed fund and the top five in the business plan category will be exempted from the evaluation stage and be fast-tracked straight to the approval committee, Badlisham said.

Strong focus is encouraged on three clusters comprising creative multimedia content, shared services and outsourcing and software e-solutions which include application software and mobility embedded software and hardware.

Badlisham said the competition has continued to aspire innovative minds of the new generation by challenging their creativity and capacity in business, science and technology.

Last year a total of 31 private and public IHLs participated in the competition resulting in the submission of 267 business ideas and 76 business plans.

"We had 31 universities participating last year, we hope more universities will come forward this year. We hope the number will increase," Badlisham said.

IHLs interested in participating in the competition must register before August 22 and submit their entries on December 1.

Shorlisted candidates will be notified on December 19, while the final results of the competition will be announced on January 12, 2009.
