The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) expects the local open source industry to record double digit growth this year, its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said.
He said MSC status companies in the open source industry generated a local revenue of over RM595 million, export revenue over RM234 million and employed 6,206 ICT-knowledged workers.
"Malaysia welcomed the open source trend as a means of enhancing our national technological competitiveness by giving local industries freedom of choice in software usage," he told a press conference after opening the MSC Malaysia Open Source Conference 2010 here Tuesday.
Open source software is about the freedom to share and collaborate in establishing software solutions.
Badlisham urged local companies to adopt open source software as a means to raise productivity and efficiency, lower cost and improve their competitiveness in global markets.
He said the industry could support the country's innovation-led transformation into a high-income economy.
"To truly embrace an innovation culture, Malaysian companies must explore new ways of empowering their people, improve business processes and refine their management," he said.
Badlisham said MSC Malaysia has continued to support the industry by conducting the Java Education and Development Initiative programme in collaboration with SUN Microsystems.
An open source laboratory has not only been established the Incubator Centre at the Multimedia University, but also PHPAcade.my, an online training facility that provides instructions for deploying hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) on the Windows platform and PHPMarketplace in partnership with Microsoft and PHP.net.my.
PHPMarketplace.my is an online service to match PHP on Windows developers to global organisations which are looking for such software development services.
